not just a horror movie. It Follows has something beautiful and deeply moving, similar to the sexual anxieties played out by the teenagers in Charles Burns 'Black Hole', my favourite of American graphic novels.
one of the most striking cinematographic rules this film adheres to is its frame centre point, always the point of dread; something that throughout the film creates a repetition that inflicts itself on you like Chinese water torture. the tiny dot in the centre frame, it might be nothing or might be the slow growing presence of the ghoul ever walking toward you.
the relationships the teenagers have remind me of those in ET, or echoes of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, or other 70' / 80's movies, where the adults just don't exist. the faces of the adults are as vague as the ghouls that haunt their children, you don't remember them. its a romanic and insular world.
best sound track.
